ASME interns have distinguished academic records and usually have extensive experience working at local magazines and websites as well as college publications. Only 10 percent of all applicants are accepted.
Applicants should be juniors when they apply, planning on completing their third year in college before June 2025 and graduating in spring 2026. Only full-time students with a grade point average of at least 3.0 will be considered for internships.
Besides overall academic performance, ASME interns are selected based on:
- academic training in journalism (but students who are not majoring in journalism or whose colleges do not offer journalism courses are frequently accepted)
- campus-journalism experience, preferably as a reporter or editor at a newspaper, magazine or website
- previous internships or employment, especially at city, regional or national newspapers, magazines or websites
Applicants are required to pay a nonrefundable processing fee of $25. ASME may forgo processing fees for students who can demonstrate financial need.
Applicants accepted into the ASME Internship Program will be notified by email in March 2025. Once accepted, each intern is assigned to a magazine or website by ASME. Interns are asked where they would like to work, but assignments are primarily based on which interns participating magazines and websites want to work for them.
Applicants can learn more about the daily experience of ASME interns by visiting ASME50.org. The website also includes a “where are they now” for interns from 1967 to the present. ASME50.org was originally compiled by the 2016 class of ASME interns and is revised each year by the current class.
Letters of Nomination From Colleges and Universities
Journalism departments and career-guidance offices are invited to recommend no more than two students for ASME internships. Students do not need to be nominated by a college or university to apply, but applicants recommended by journalism departments or career-guidance offices are given preference over students from the same school. Letters of recommendation must be included in each student’s application. To ensure geographic diversity, only one student will be accepted from any college or university.
Wages, Expenses and Housing
ASME interns are temporary employees of the magazines and websites where they are assigned. ASME interns usually work 35 hour a week and are paid the minimum wage in the city or state where their assigned magazine or website is based. Minimum wage in New York City is $16 per hour; minimum wage in Washington, D.C., is $17.50 per hour.
ASME interns are responsible for their own travel, housing, meals and personal expenses. Interns are responsible for arranging their own housing. ASME will provide information about student housing in New York and Washington. Housing costs for the length of the ASME Internship Program are approximately $4,000 in New York and Washington.
